Blue Star Programme Part 4This year was extra special as it was Ireland’s 50th anniversary of joining the EU. The 6th Class completed the Blue Star Programme Element Quizzes. This consisted of four live quizzes between April 17 and May 12, 2023, and they thoroughly enjoyed using the Kahoot platform to do this.Last but not least, for Europe Day, on May 9, we held a ‘Handshake for Europe’ and held aEurovision Song Contest, where we were divided into the following groups. The Brazilian students represented Portugal and composed their own Portuguese rap. The students studying Spanish next year learned the days of the week and months in Spanish and composed a Spanish song. We completed a song in Gaeilge using the Macarena actions. We created an English song using animal sounds. Next, we created a French song about greetings and introducing yourself. We learned Ode to Joy," the European anthem, and sang this on Europe Day. The Portuguese group taught us all about colours and greetings through song. Our final note as 6th class at Gort National School was that we enjoyed learning about Europe and learned that there was and can be conflict between countries, but through peace, friendship, and unity, we can all work for a better Europe and a better world. Blue Star Programme Part 3 Finally, in March, the 6th Class completed a digital book creator project on the European Union. They researched information from(www.european movement.ie) to aid them with this task. On the front slide, they had to include the name of the current Minister of State for European Affairs and put the European Union flag in the background. On slide 2, they had to research the European Commission's representation in Ireland. For the historical element, they picked a historical figure they hadn’t researched before and designed four slides around it. For this part, most of the class studied either WW1 or WW2, Anne Frank, Ancient Rome, or the Berlin Wall. For the geographical element, they had to pick a country they hadn’t studied before and describe that EU country, illustrating that country’s flag, capital city, population, language, what it is famous for, and its similarities and differences to Ireland. For the cultural aspect, they selected some Europeans from various walks of life, i.e., sport, fashion, music, etc., and designed an informative slide on him or her. Finally, for the institutional element, they designed a slide about how the EU works, how the different institutions cooperate with each other, and the impact of the EU on their lives. They then created some other slides on elections and referendums. How do they become members of the EU? Who represents Ireland? How was the EU founded and why did Ireland join in 1973? ... Blue Star Programme Part 2In January 6th Class held a food fair where they were divided into different country groups including, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Germany, Greece, France,and Ireland and each individual created a recipe from their country and brought these recipes to school. What a wonderful day it was, a day full of crepes, tortillas, Polish Zebra cake,bollos, Greek salad and more. They were spoilt for choice. Following this 6th Class were split into different groups and tasked with a group country of study project in which each student focused on one area of that coutry. For example the Historians picked historical figures like Hitler, Picasso,Monet, Greek Gods. For the Cultural aspect our 6th Class students spoke about the culture arts (each group picked an artist and spoke about their work), the music(dance) and food of the country. They also spoke about myths and legends of the country and about when the country joined the EU. The 6th Class students also created a language section so each student got an opportunity to learn a few words in Polish, Greek, French, German, Irish,Portuguese and Spanish. Thank you, Blue Star, from all in 6th Class🤩 They now have their very own passports to Europe. They really enjoyed participating in this programme and had so much fun completing all of the activities involved. The next series of posts will bring you back through their class journey this school year so stay tuned and enjoy!Since the beginning of September, 6th Class have spent their Friday evenings researching the European Union and its countries, with special emphasis on history, culture, geography, and institutions. Their teacher, Ms. Connolly, made them a booklet with different Blue Star activities using the worksheets on the Blue Star website (from which they used the iPads to research). They focused on learning all about the history of World War I and how its aftermath helped lead to the creation of the EU. They read the diary of Anne Frank and studied her life in detail, as part of their task of studying a historical figure.
